Hammersley Residence, North Salem, NY

The challenge of this project was to provide for a growing family’s needs while respecting the character of their old barn and countryside surrounding it. Our solution: “breaking the box” with a two-story wall at 45 degrees, which serves to divide the public and private areas of the house. We blended classic materials such as barn-board siding, reclaimed pine flooring, and metal roofing with a modern architectural attitude, allowing us to forge a strong connection among the original structure, the area’s vernacular architecture, and the shifting needs of a contemporary family.
